The Shroud and the Science

When the shroud was photographed the first time in 1898 and it was noticed, that the image on the shroud is in a fact a negative (each photographically negative is a positiv), the shroud was treated scientifically serious.

In 1978 the catholic church, the owner of the shroud, gave its permission for an intensive research. 40 experts were given 5 days, in order to examine the shroud according to the rules of science. In this project (The Shroud of Turin Research Project, STURP) more than 150.000 man-days have been spent. There is a special scientific discipline ("Sindology"), dedicated to the interdisciplinary research of this object.
